LANAP Gum Treatment

LANAP at Always Beautiful Smile

Hi, my name is Dr. Olga Degtyareva, here at Always Beautiful Smile. We get a lot of questions about LANAP. What is it? What does it do? I'm here to help answer some of the most commonly asked ones.

Dr. Olga Degtyareva

What is LANAP?

LANAP is a fancy word for laser gum therapy. It is a procedure where we go in with a laser around every single tooth that has periodontal disease, that has gum disease. It's a process where we stop the bacteria, debacterialize the area, and stop the bacterial breakdown of the bone around teeth, allowing you to keep them. This is how we achieve stability of the teeth because we want you to keep your teeth. It's simply a fancy term for laser gum therapy.

Is LANAP better than traditional gum surgery?

It's definitely much less invasive. Let's talk about traditional gum surgery. Traditional gum surgery, or periodontal surgery, involves taking a scalpel, making an incision, creating a flap to expose the bone underneath the gum, cleaning everything up, putting some bone graft in there, and stitching it all up. It's very invasive. The laser gum therapy, LANAP, is much, much less invasive. There are no stitches, no cutting, no blades, or scalpels involved. We go around each tooth with a laser, which cleans up all the bacteria and removes everything around the teeth. There are no cuts, no scalpels, no stitches, making it much easier for you to recover from.

How long does LANAP take?

It's two appointments because it's too much work for you and for us to do the entire mouth in one session. When you undergo LANAP treatment, you must debacterialize the entire mouth. If you have loose teeth, you can't only focus on those teeth. You must treat the entire mouth because bacteria from untreated areas will travel back, and you'll be back to square one, wasting time and money. You must do the entire mouth, which requires two visits. The mouth is split in half, right side and left side, or top and bottom. Each visit is 3 hours long. You will be here for about 3 hours, start to finish. When you leave, you'll go home with a series of antibiotics and painkillers. You return 3 weeks later to treat the other half. So, two 3-hour appointments 3 weeks apart. That's the process for LANAP.

Can LANAP help to regenerate bone?

Absolutely yes. We have seen it time and time again in our cases. If we can come in and debacterialize the mouth, removing the bacteria causing the gum disease, and you maintain it by keeping it clean and coming in for regular checkups, the bone does come back. The teeth stabilize, the gums look nice, and they are pink and healthy. You get to keep your teeth. That's why we do all this.

Find out why more people are turning to LANAP. Unlike traditional scalpel gum surgery, there is no cutting of the gum tissues or sewing with stitches, so the whole experience is virtually pain-free.

What Is LANAP?

LANAP is the only FDA-cleared laser surgery to treat gum disease. This remarkable surgical protocol allows for targeted removal of diseased gum tissue while leaving your body’s own healthy tissues intact. In this way, LANAP allows for an environment where you can actually heal yourself!

Over 50% of American adults have gum disease – an infection below the gum line. Gum disease is linked to several health problems – from heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and pre-term babies – but only a small percentage of these adults get the treatment they need. Traditional gum disease treatment options involve cutting the gum tissue or extracting the teeth.

The LANAP® protocol uses the specific wavelength PerioLase® MVP-7™ dental laser to vaporize bacteria deep within the pockets of the gums while leaving healthy tissue intact. Patients undergoing this type of treatment enjoy fast healing times and more predictable results. Take care of your oral and total health today.

Minimal Pain

LANAP® laser gum surgery is effective and minimally invasive. Unlike traditional surgery, LANAP® does not use scalpels to cut and remove tissue from the gum line. Instead, a highly sophisticated laser vaporizes infected tissue in a minimally painful manner.

Less Bleeding

LANAP can actually cauterize your wounds and minimize any bleeding that may occur. In addition to the absence of scalpels and other cutting instruments, LANAP® is able to target the root of your problem in order to prevent the need for future procedures.

Faster Healing

LANAP® may allow you to maintain the integrity of healthy tissue around your teeth and avoid loss of bone. It is an effective treatment for gum disease and can result in a quicker healing time.
